Thornton Le Dale Short Mat Bowls Club is a friendly, not for profit club which was founded in 1982.

Short mat bowls is based on the rules of lawn bowls, with the aim of getting more bowls closer to the 'jack' than the opposition bowls. There is the addition of a wooden block in the centre of the mat as an obstruction to make things a little more challenging.

We play in the village hall in the picturesque village of Thornton Le Dale up to three days a week during the months of September to April.

We currently have around 30 active members of differing ages and as a club we compete in two local area leagues: The Ryedale league, which is predominately on a Tuesday evening and the Dales League which is in the afternoon.

We also have social bowling leagues on Thursday and Sunday mornings.

As we play indoors it is a gentler sport than outdoors with the benefit of the playing area being shorter and being indoors throughout the colder months.

Bowls is a great way to keep active and meet people from Thornton Le Dale and the surrounding area.
